This is a great idea to scatter your day with small meaningful breaks. Little breaks are key to walk, meditate, read, do pull ups, squats. Good to do some mental and some physical. All adds up to a better day. Thanks for sharing I just subscribed.

Thanks for the share and for subscribing! Micro (or longer) breaks in my day have been a game changer for me.

The starting small idea is so important

Baby steps is so important! Whenever I stop doing mindfulness and I'm finding it difficult to get back into it, it helps to tell myself "ok today I'm only doing one minute". Literally just one minute of focusing on my breath and nothing else. It's a good reset.

What a great technique! Lowering the bar for ourselves is so important to keeping us going.

I love this Jillian! What a great reminder to let go of the β€˜all or nothing’ mentality (a trap I often get sucked into!), and that there is value in starting small.

It’s so easy to fall into that trap! Happens to me too. I’m glad it was helpful.

I started practicing 'joy breaks' at work in 2023. I bought a special cube timer for it and flip it to 5 or 10 minutes a few times a day at work. I walk away from the desk and do something I enjoy for 5 minutes, and it brings my stress levels down and adds 'joy' to my day!

It works well for me because I work from home. I will usually go sit outside and read for a few minutes. Or walk around the block.

But what if you don't work from home?

If I were back in the office (sometimes I am) I put my phone in my pocket and go outside, to the break-room or cafeteria and read off my kindle reader, or simply take a walk around the building.

My prior boss supported mental health so this would be just fine to do. Now I am the boss and I encourage my people to take these kind of breaks during the day. These tiny pockets of break-time can help with energy and more productive work.

This is amazing that you do this for yourself AND encourage people to do the same. Leaders are so important when it comes to creating a culture of wellness at work. I love the term β€˜joy break’!

I’ve had a challenging 12 months with work and recently mentioned to a friend that I didn’t know how I was managing to keep up with life outside of work, having energy to climb, do and teach yoga, write. She very directly said, I think it’s because you have continued those things that you have been able to keep going at work. I think she was very right and now I’m hanging onto those things even more tightly now, ensuring they feature in my week.

Before I felt so burned out & overwhelmed, I spent time with friend(s). I’d like to do thisβ€”but they’re all burned out and overwhelmed as well, I think!

That sounds like a hard place to be. I know from experience how burnout is, so I’m sending good vibes your way. I’ve found that voice notes sometimes let me feel connected to people even when we don’t have the energy to connect in person.

That's a really smart idea. None of my friends have really adapted to voice notes in our communications (that's what I get for having so many Writer Friends), but I'd love to do that, & maybe I can convince someone to get into it, too. Thank you.
