What is ‘Humans Leading’?
If you're looking for a less stressed, more satisfying life, this is the place for you.
Hey there, Welcome to Humans Leading!
I’m Dr. Jillian, and I created this publication to help worn-out, ambitious women transform their lives.
I’m a busy pediatric ICU physician, toddler mom, coach, and national speaker who uses what I’ve learned from recovering from burnout twice to help other people live less stressed, more satisfying lives.
Several years ago, I found myself exhausted and stuck, no longer interested in the relentless pursuit of academic success in medicine. Instead, I wanted to find a way to live and work that was meaningful to me and left enough energy for me to enjoy my life outside the hospital. And that’s how Humans Leading was born.
I started Humans Leading as a way to make sense of my own experience, to grow, and to connect with people like you who are looking to transform their own lives.
I mostly write short pieces with practical takeaways because I understand how challenging it can be to carve out time for yourself and because small commitments of time can add up to big changes in our lives over time.

Why ‘Humans Leading’?
I chose the name of this publication to remind myself (and you) that, although we can do amazing things, we are not machines (and even machines get regularly scheduled maintenance). We need and deserve rest, joy, and time away from work.
How Can This Publication Help Me?
I’m still discovering what a successful, fulfilling life looks like for myself, and I’m sharing what I learn along the way to help you do the same in yours.
Over the past two years, I’ve loved seeing how people use what they’ve read here to make incredible changes in their own lives. It brings me joy and satisfaction to be a part of their journeys.

What do I get when I subscribe?
Since Humans Leading is a labor of love for me that I do on the side of my day job(s), posts come out when inspiration strikes and time in my schedule allows (usually 2-4 per month). I like to write in a way that gives me flexibility to avoid burnout (which would be ironic for a publication designed to help people recover from burnout, yes?). At this time, all posts are free to read.
If you’re looking to check it out before subscribing, you can get started with a few of the most popular posts (including a great podcast collaboration with a fellow Substacker!):
Growth is a Process, not a Destination
Join me for a 4-week read and listen-along to Brene Brown's Gifts of Imperfection. This post will take you to the wrap-up post complete with all of the links!
If You Wait to Rest Until Your To-Do List is Done, You'll Never Take a Break
You deserve a break. You're not a machine, and even machines get routine maintenance.
The Simple Complexity of Asking For Help
Resilience doesn't mean you don't need help. It means you are willing to ask for help. You can learn how in this podcast episode with fellow Substacker Chris Anselmo.
